As a result of the continuous further development of the product portfolio of KNOTH Automation GmbH, a new intermediate cleaning system without use of compressed air has been designed. This system is impressive thanks to its simple and compact construction, offering ultimate reliability and attainable cleanliness. The KNOTH intermediate cleaning system “Z-AIR-O” provides vacuum-based cleaning of workpieces.

With the patented lamellar structure, which is placed around the workpiece, simple intermediate cleaning of the surfaces with minimum energy input can be performed. Precisely defined, flow-optimised areas are specified across the entire workpiece, and these are vacuumed off one after another. The complex surface of the workpieces is levelled out to "one level" by the lamellae combs, making each individual surface accessible to our system.

KNOTH Z-AIR-O intermediate cleaning systems clean without the use of compressed air. Even the drive shafts can be equipped with electric drives, rendering the Z-AIR-O systems completely independent of central compressed air networks, which can then even be used in mobile designs.

As an option, compressed air will only be used for defined cleaning tasks. With low-pressure nozzles specifically integrated into the lamellae boxes, the effect of the nozzles lasts a maximum of 2 seconds per workpiece. This results in a compressed air consumption of only a few litres!

The problem

By means of a 4-cylinder crankshaft:

During a total cycle time of only 30 seconds (20 seconds available intermediate cleaning duration), crankshafts contaminated by grinding oil must be cleaned in such a way that they are not dripping for at least 30 minutes.


Retrofitting your Z-AIR-O system is super easy due to its modular design. The lamellae boxes can be replaced in just a few simple steps - in less than 3 minutes.

Naturally, KNOTH also provides a solution for automatic set-up operations! In our Z-AIR-O Tower systems, a large number of different workpiece types can be cleaned periodically due to several layers.

Spray cleaning integrated

All Z-AIR-O systems can be equipped with optional flushing. It does not mean simply spraying onto the workpieces: The medium being used is focussed in a targeted way onto the workpiece surface, precisely flushes the surface contour and is extracted again at the same time and fed to an external container. From here, the medium being collected is regularly and automatically pumped out including contaminations.

Contaminations within the Z-AIR-O systems are thus minimal and any maintenance tasks are reduced to an absolute minimum. The design of the lamellae boxes is also completely wear-free - as standard!
